Jackson
Hi everybody. I would like to start a disscusion about Jackson. The era that we are studying is called the Jacksonion era and it's worth disscussing how his policies effected the country now and then. Any one doing the extra credit got two percpecties on the man, one from two girls reliving the pain caused by his actions and one article glorifying Jackson as a crucial founding father of America. Try to focus on the direct effects of his policies on events after his time, then on how his policies effect us today. So now for you input.....

Well for one Jackson had a lot to with the way elections are ran today. He changed the way the electoral colleges are run. People now have the power to choose the voters in the electoral college. Jackson wanted a nation ran by the people which was of major importance back then and even today. Without Jackson the nation may have been different.

Edgar,
Different how? Be more specific in what you are saying.
I do agree with Edgar that without Jackson, the elections even today would all be different as well. In regards to "different", there is no specific answer, since we cannot know for sure what might've happened, only what did happen. However, a scenario would be that America could be run by high social elites. The working class and lower class would have no say in government, and America submerged oligarchy. Of course, even without Jackson's influence, American may still retain the idea on popular/majority vote today. Who knows?
Well, if we are considering voting and elections then without Jackson we, the people, would most likely not be voting. Like we talked about in class, the founding fathers did not want as much power as we have today to be placed in the hands of the people, especially with regards to the government. I could imagine that Universal White Manhood Suffrage would not have been put in place and, if we accomplished voting for the people, that there would be different regulation (as apposed to owning land) put in place to restrict types of voters. Also, without Jackson, there is a large chance that the president would remain a job for the descendents of the founding fathers and original colony political figures. That means Abraham Lincoln may have never become president, meaning slavery could still be practiced today. Who knows, America could have possibly become a country ruled by a monarchy. Thee possibilities are endless by we are definitely able to deduce some possibilities.
Exactly what I mean about several presidents never being elected Alex. Maybe Franklin D. Roosevelt could have lost his election and the U.S. could have still been in the Great Depression and never have gotten out of it. Its really hard to tell what could have happened, but it could have been for the better or the worse
Jackson fought a war against the national bank, and triumphed. He whittled down its funds and distributed them to state banks which supported him. We feel the effects of that decision today through numerous and varying banks throughout our country, and he have the choice of where to invest our money.
i agree with Justin about the banks, without that incidence taking place then we might not have the choice of where to put our money if we were choosing to put it in a bank. Of course we would still have the option of stuffing it in our mattress but you wouldn't ahve a choice of banks you would have a national bank and no various state banks to choose from. So without Jackson there would probably be some bad turns for the American people if you deduce that no one else would have the idea of "wildcat" banks
yes, jackson played a very important role in extending privileges, mainly political ones such as voting, to the common man. however, the way we run politics today doesn't follow Jackson's way exactly. for example, during jackson's time through the spoils system, very very ordinary people who were probably not quallified were allowed to take positions in office just by being a supporter of the party. nowadays, although we are ordinary people, we don't want just any old "common man" in office. this was an issue with president george w. bush. people thought he was too simple and and ordinary to be leader of the nation. naturally, you want someone one who you can look up to for your leader, usually not someone you see on the same level as yourself. Jackson even had an effect on the election this year. A major part of Obama's campaign was that he was giving tax cuts to the middle class who make up 95% of America's population. Had Jackson never happened,Obama may have needed to appeal to the elite upper 5% instead
Well I like to say that Jackson's effect in the American policies today are effective and at the same time very influential. What i meant by influential is that people see the good things in Jackson's policy and the follow it even still today. I agree with Edgar that without Jackson, U.S. wouldn't be what it is today without him.
